Nepal's violent unification in 1768 with King Gurkha Prither Narayan Shah entailed the subjugation of most peoples of the various nationalities of the country and established the Shah Dynasty. Since then, the ruling class has been the Brahmin caste (the upper caste of the domination system that originates in India) and the Khash nationality (a people from the Khasan region of western Nepal).

When the Shah dynasty signed the Sugauli treaty with British India in 1816, it surrendered almost a third of Nepal's territory and made Nepal a semicolony of Great Britain. India, after its independence from Britain in 1948, picked up where the British had stopped relative to Nepal.
