To what extent do the slave rules in the journal of Bennet Barrow indicate a concern for productivity (producing a large amount

of good quality cotton) rather than strictly paternalism (demonstrating the superiority of one's decision making over dependents)? Paternalism: Behavior or attitudes of superiority over another person or persons; denying some (or all) liberty or autonomy of those "inferior" persons while believing it is in their best interest. View the background video and read the Bennet Barrow journal sources. Note evidence in Barrow's Highland Plantation Rules and his diary that suggest his interest in creating an environment where the slave would be more productive and other evidence of his primarily controlling slaves to maintain his paternal control. In the Concepts and Evidence Chart, list 2 concepts that support productivity and 2 that support paternalism and list several pieces of evidence under each.

Productivity:

Concept: Bennet Barrow explains that he punishes the slaves for not picking the cotton correctly because it causes the quality of the cotton to be less. He believes that if he whips the slave for this mistake that they will not do it again and the quality of the cotton will be better.

Evidence: “whipped 8 or 10 for weight today, those that pick least weights, generally most trash (meaning not picking the cotton without dried leaves, sticks, etc.)”

Productivity:

Concept: This is an example of productivity from the “Rules for Highland Plantation”. Barrow states that the plantation will operate successfully if all of its parts (slaves) are working as they should be. If the slaves are working the plantation as they should be, the amount of good quality cotton will increase.

Evidence: “A plantation might be considered as a piece of machinery, to operate successfully, all of its parts should be uniform and exact, and the impelling force regular and steady [punishment]. And the master, if he pretended at all to attend to his business, should be their impelling force.”

Why is external criticism so important when it comes to analyzing data?
julsineya [31]
External criticism is when historians check the validity of a source to verify whether or not it's authentic.

This process is important regarding analyzing data, because we have to question whether or not we can trust the data and use it as a reference point.

Answer: Copernicus heliocentric theory. Kepler laws on the motion of the planets. Galileo Jupiter Moon Detection.

Explanation:

  • Copernicus between 1510 and 1514 created the first sketch of the heliocentric theory. Copernicus explained the rotation of the Earth around the Sun and defined the change of seasons by the process of touring the Earth around the Sun. Towards the end of his life, he published a piece entitled "On the Rotation of the Heavenly Circles" in which he advocated a heliocentric model of the universe. Changed the calendar. He determined the existence of a triple motion of the Earth and its rotation about the axis, as well as the procession of the Earth's axis. Copernicus also established that the moon is not a planet.
  • Kepler was a German astronomer and mathematician. Kepler discovered regularities in planetary motions known as Kepler's laws. The first two laws were published in 1609. In the same year, he described how the moon affects the tide. Kepler also contributed to modern optics by creating a telescope.
  • Galileo was an Italian astronomer, mathematician and philosopher. One part of his life was in the Italian city of falls, where he studied mechanics, free fall, horizontal shot, and considering the thermal expansion of liquids, he also constructed the first thermometer. In 1609 he also made the first binoculars. This invention led to a revolution in the study of celestial bodies. Therefore, Galileo soon confirmed the Copernican theory, which brought him into conflict with the church. In 1616 the church forbade this teaching. Galileo is best known for his statement "Eppur si muove" or Still moving, which he allegedly uttered either after the trial or upon house arrest, thinking that the Earth was orbiting the Sun after all.
