This periodic rise and fall of waters over the land lead to the deposition of many layers of sediment and the formation of sedimentary (D) rocks.

Sedimentary stones are formed from the matter which is deposited by the passage of water, ice, or wind: minerals, fragments of preexisting rocks or fossils, etc. Indiana's bedrock surface is made out of sedimentary rocks such as:

  • limestone,
  • dolomite,
  • shale,
  • gypsum,
  • sandstone,
  • siltstone.

These rocks are important to Indiana's economy because of their mineable potential.
