New states in the west allowed suffrage for all white males regardless of property. SInce some older states felt threatened (more people would move to the west, in effect changing the number of representatives for the house), they also started eliminating voting property requirements. Thus, contributing to the <span>growth of democracy.</span>

The state constitutions between 1800 and 1840 contributed greatly to the growth of democracy, which we know today. This is because each constitution gradually allowed citizens to participate more in the political processes of the state.
