2. Mendel focused on traits that had two alleles (A or a) in which one was dominant and the other was recessive. Yet many genes

may have multiple alleles. What is an example in your book of a gene that has multiple alleles

The example of a gene having multiple alleles is ABO blood system in human.

Explanation:

Sometimes the gene can have three or more alleles on the same locus, but in reality only 2 alleles are present in the individual.

It is a deviation from Mendel's law of inheritance.

There are three allelic forms of gene of blood group on the locus as A,B and O and have more than two phenotype for a gene.

Type A (iA), Type B (IB), OR type O

the 3 combinations can give genotype of

type A, Type B, type AB or O BLOOD GROUPS.

Type A can be homozygous as IA IA or heterozygous as ( having one O allele) IAI

same genotype for B is also there.

Type O is recessive with two O alleles.

Since A or B type are equally dominnat they give rise to AB type.

How can using a dam as a source of freshwater also harm agricultural resources?
Snezhnost [94]

The dam acts as a barrier between upstream and downstream. Dams are also built for irrigation, but it is also deliberately destroyed in favor of irrigated farming. Though it provides freshwater, and makes people be protected by droughts, but it can also damage the agricultural resources by limiting the water in some areas.

Why did bear island provide a great opportunity to decipher entire food chains?
Sergio [31]

Answer:

Due to the presence of limited number of species.

Explanation:

Bear island provide a great opportunity to decipher entire food chains because this island has many animals species which interact with each other or depend on one another due to the presence of less animals for feeding purpose. This island is isolated from the rest of the world so it provide a great opportunity to study the entire food chains that are present at that island. There is less number of species so knowing about their feeding choices is easier for the ecologists.

A team of biologists develop a new drug, and one team member hypothesizes that the drug is incapable of freely passing across th
matrenka [14]

Answer:

B: The drug is a small charged molecule

Explanation:

Substances can passively diffuse in and out of the cell via the cell membrane in two ways;

 • Simple diffusion
 • Facilitated diffusion

The cell membrane allows small molecules or ions to freely diffuse across it in response to concentration difference between the inner and outer parts of the cell membrane. This is known as simple diffusion.

In facilitated diffusion, special proteins in the cell membrane, known as channel/carrier proteins binds with molecules and facilitates their diffusion across the cell membrane by carrying them through special channels in the membrane.

Hence, to support the alternative hypothesis that the new drug will exhibit simple diffusion across the plasma membrane, the drug should be a small charged molecule.

Correct option: B
