You live in the northeast US, and over the course of a particular winter, you experienced frequent snow, poor weather, and well

below normal temperatures. Your friend, who lives in the southwest US, experienced mostly fair weather and average (mild) temperatures through that same winter. Based on the discussion of mid-latitude cyclone formation in chapter 12, explain why this pattern of winter weather in each location would likely persist every winter.

Answer:

Mid latitude cyclone are low pressure regional cyclone system formed in 30 to 55 N or S. In this region continental polar and tropical air masses collide to form fronts. Fronts are the boundary between two air masses. This front pushes the warm air to the north and cold air to the south and generating a clockwise rotation. Cyclone starts to form from southwest and reaches mature stage to form a well developed cold front and warm front. This cyclone become weak, both cold and warm front merge as occluded front, this causes the snow and poor weather condition in northeast US, same time southwest is the formation zone, so mild temperature.

A section of a topographic map is shown below. What is the difference in elevation in meters between Point X and Point Y on the
musickatia [10]

The difference in elevation in meters between the points X and Y is 360.

Explanation:

On the presented map we can see that the relief is depicted with contour lines. The contour lines are marked with their elevations, or rather the main contour lines are, every fifth one. We also have the contour interval, which is 20 meters, thus giving us the basis so that we can find the difference in elevation between any points on the map.

What we know for sure from the map is:

  • the elevation is increasing from southeast toward northwest
  • the difference in elevation between the contour lines is 20 m
  • the difference in elevation between the main contour lines is 100 m

Point X is marked on the contour line of 1,600 m. Point Y is marked on the second contour line between the 1,200 m and 1,300 m contour lines, thus:

2 x 20 = 40

So we have 1,240 m. Having the elevations of the two points, we only need to take the lower value from the larger value:

1,600 - 1,240 = 360 m

So we get a result of 360 m of difference in elevation between the points X and Y.
