People in Northern Europe after the Hundred Years of War began to show interest in Renaissance which was happening in Italy. Painters from Northern Europe began to study the techniques of famous artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

The Renaissance for the first time began to take place in Italy because of its city-states like Milan, Venice, Florence, and Genoa, which were wealthy and flourished because of the trade these cities conducted. Renaissance than started to spread in Northern region of the Alps through northern Europe traders, and scholars who came to Italy for study and in return brought back ideas, techniques, and philosophies. Jan van Eyck, Hans Holbein the Elder, and Albrecht Durer, some of the significant individuals played a principal role in contributing their work in paintings, engraving, and printworks.
