When oligomycin is added to an actively respiring muscle cell, ATP synthase is inhibited. Which of the following predicts the ef

fect of oligomycin on the rate of oxygen usage and the rate of electron transport through the ETC?
a) The rate of oxygen usage remains the same, but the rate of electron transport through the ETC decreases.
b) The rate of electron transport through the ETC remains the same, but the rate of oxygen usage decreases.
c) The rates of both oxygen usage and electron transport through the ETC decrease.
d) The rates of both oxygen usage and electron transport through the ETC remain the same.

Answer:

<h2>C </h2>

Explanation:

1. Oligomycin is an antibiotic: it inhibits ATP synthase ( which synthesis ATP) by blocking its  F0 subunit (proton channel), which is compulsory for ATP synthesis.

2. By the use of  oligomycin , oxygen consumption stops because oligomycin inhibits ATP synthesis, which is coupled to the activity of the electron-transport chain.

3. The inhibition of ATP synthesis would also stop electron transport chain (ETC), reason is that the high proton concentration build up is not dissipated, the free energy is not enough to pump  protons against the increased gradient.

Determination of Caloric Content of Three Foods1. Compare the calorimeter that you built to a bomb calorimeter. How are they sim
yulyashka [42]

Answer:

The answers to both parts (1 and 2) are given below.

Explanation:

1. The calorimeter is similar to the bomb calorimeter in a way that both measure the changes in heat that occur as result of the chemical reaction taking place inside them. They are different in the sense that a bomb calorimeter provides an isolated system with constant volume and pressure, whereas a regular calorimeter allows pressure to equalize with the environment.

2. Carbohydrates are the molecules that break down and provides energy for cellular functions. Whereas, proteins are not meant for the production of energy but for the production of amino acids to function as structural units for protein synthesis. Simply, the breakdown of protein is for the synthesis of more proteins by providing several units of amino acids rather than the production of energy.

Why do cells don't just continue to grow larger as organisms grow larger. why do cells divide
mart [117]
Because an organism needs even more cells to help it function better and change as it grows (like metamorphosis and yes, puberty :p) and if the same amount of cells stay then the organism's cells will be functioning and working harder.....so cells divide so many different ones can continue to work on different parts of the organism as it grows and changes. Plus it'd be weird if we only had like 1 thousand cells in our body from mothers' pregnancy the size of hi-polymer erasers (the big ones)..........
