Fairies were thought to play tricks on people just for the fun of it or to be cruel. Here, Oberon is playing a trick on Titania, but he has a reason. Shakespeare making the fairies more human-like allows for the fairies to be paralleled with the humans in the play. It also makes the fairies gentler.
