In this paragraph, the author uses a first-person perspective to develop an understanding of the actions of Grendel. According to poet, Grendel is seriously misunderstood, as he is looked upon as a symbol of evil by the humans, who would raid the village and cause destruction. However, the poet shows him to be in awe of humans, as he watches them transform into a very intelligent civilization. This makes him feel inferior, as he is constantly reminded of his own shortcomings. He is not evil, infact, he is curious to learn the ways of humans. He has a sound temperament and is rational enough to understand that he would not be given a place among humans or be accepted in their midst. Thus, he is much like humans, aside from their violent bloodlust and thirst for battle. He knows that he is doomed to be perpetually separated from the human civilization, but still feels connected to them.

Through the course of the poem, Grendel does not understand the nature and extent of violence that humans perpetrated against their fellows. Even though their ways of organizing life was capable of inspiring awe, Grendel seemed to gradually lose his admiration for the human race, and he undertook his mission for life, as he set out to remove the human evil from society. His first interaction with humans is definitely brutal, and this means that he would have to face the new challenges from his foray into the human world.This enrages him and he decides to wage war on all humans, associating them with evil. He decides to embark on a mission to reduce the evil on Earth. His philosophical stance is very similar to that of humans, and the poet stresses that he is a highly misunderstood character.
