Study the cartoon Creating Entitlement Minded Winners by Ed Wilson. 2 men are looking at a display of sports trophies. One man s

ays "Wow! Your son must be a great athlete." The other man says "Never played. Parcticipation trophies." How does exaggeration create irony in this cartoon? The large speech balloons create irony because readers expect the son to be an accomplished athlete. The large font size of “wow” creates irony because the reader does not expect anyone to be impressed. The oversized trophies create irony because readers expect that they are for winning, not participation. The colored shirts create irony because the reader does not expect color in the cartoon.

Answer:

How does exaggeration create irony in this cartoon?

The oversized trophies create irony because readers expect that they are for winning, not participation.

Explanation:

This should be the most logical answer to the question. This is because, the man never imagined that the trophies which he saw was for the friend's son participating rather than winning.

1. You can see through the comparison to a mountain, that the grandpa is tall and always there 'looming' (hovering) over the speaker. You can see that the speaker does not speak much around his grandpa, as he is "silent as a stone".

2. These details show that the speaker is impressed by his grandpa and looks up to him the way a stone would look up to a mountain-it shows that he hopes one day he will grow to be like his grandpa.

3. The theme of this poem is shown through the way the speaker looks at his grandpa and the shed. The shed needs more than paint because it is so old, which relates to his grandpa and the theme of growing older.
