Answer:

The narrator's attention to the arrival of Martians was first drawn when a large cylindrical object crashed near the home of the narrator in Maybury.

Explanation:

"The War Of The Worlds" is a science fiction written by H. G. Wells.

The novel is about the invasion of Martians on planet Earth to destroy it and take over it.

In the novel, the narrator is a hobbyist astronomer who, first, sensed the invasion of Martians on Earth, when he observed the flashes from Mars. About this, the narrator, informs his friend Ogilvy, who mocks him and ignored  his observation.

<u>The narrator's attention was first drawn to the arrival of Martians when there was a crash of a cylindrical object near his home in Maybury. Which sentences contain correctly punctuated nonrestrictive modifiers?
Kay [80]

A nonrestrictive modifier adds information that is not essential for the reader to understand the sentence. In case the nonrestrictive modifier is eliminated, the meaning would remain the same. Only nonrestrictive modifiers are separated by commas. Taking this into account, the sentences that contain correctly punctuated nonrestrictive modifiers are:

  • My oldest sister, Maria, is a pilot - If we remove <em>Maria</em>, we can still identify which sister we are talking about.
  • My two best friends, Tory and Monica, met me at the movies - If we remove <em>Tory and Monica</em>, we can still identify which two people we are referring to.
  • Bulldogs, which I love, are the cutest! - If we remove <em>which I love</em>, we can still identify which dogs we are talking about.

Read the excerpt from The Code Book. Without much hope of a theoretical breakthrough, cryptanalysts have been forced to look for
adoni [48]

Answer:

The author’s purpose in this paragraph is to <u>explain the need for faster technology in cryptanalysis.</u>

Explanation:

Simon Singh's book on the history of cryptography "The Code Book" presents an illustrative representation of the world of cryptography. In it, he reveals the secrets of the cryptographic world, the history of encryption, and the evolution in the field.

As given in the passage, the author presents how a newer and better technology is needed by cryptographers if they are to make success in a fast way in the <em>"speed of factoring"</em>. Silicon chips may help but that is not enough for it can change. Rather, he argues for the need for a <em>"technology that is billions of times faster than current computers"</em>. And if scientists were to build a <em>"quantum computer"</em>, it will definitely be a huge success for them for <em>"it would be able to perform calculations with such enormous speed that it would make a modern supercomputer look like a broken abacus".</em> Thus, the<u> whole passage is to explain why cryptoanalysis requires faster technology. </u>
