The correct answer is: "Humphrey was hurt by his association with the adminstration’s Vietnam War policy."

Before running for President, Humphrey was Lyndon B. Johnson's Vice President, the head of state when the Vietnam War really exploded.

Humphrey promised to end the War if he was elected, but the critics he received from his opponent, Richard Nixon, on how he poorly handled the affairs at Vietnam during his vice presidency, ultimately led him to a loss. Nonetheless, he lost the 1968 Elections by one of the smallest margins in the country's history, and some even say that he could have won if the elections would have been held a week later.
