Q2.25. Assume that early in the summer, the only prey available are stoneflies and caddisflies. If the search time for its prefe

rred prey (the more profitable stonefly) is too long, the house martin should include both stoneflies and caddisflies in its diet. What is the value of this critical search time for stoneflies

Answer:

The search time is inversely proportional to prey density

Explanation:

Optimal foraging theory is a model used to predict animal behavior during the search of food, which is a critical process that requires the consumption of energy and time. In order to increase its fitness value, animals acquire foraging skills that help to obtain higher energy rates for the lowest cost. Thus, the optimal foraging model enables the prediction of the optimal strategy that allows to maximize the gain of energy during a particular time interval. The critical search time indicates the time that a consumer needs to add additional prey to its menu. In this model, a consumer will be converted to a 'generalist' and will add a second prey to its menu when the search time for the preferred prey is higher to the energy-time coefficient to obtain such prey.

A trait, such as height, has high heritability because much of the variation between individuals is the result of genetic variat
Len [333]

This is because the traits like height, are influenced by environmental conditions around the individual. For example, there are two children born to same mother. But one is given best facilities, nutrition and care, whereas other one is brought up by a poor family, which hardly get good food to eat. His condition is much worse than the first case. In such a situation, the former child will grow up healthy and fit, and will have more height than the later one. Although, both got genes from same parent, but the environmental conditions influenced the expression of those genes differently.

This reduction in starch content occurred because starch was changed into simple sugars

Explanation:

Starch is a polymeric carbohydrate consist of many glucose units linked by glycosidic bonds. The iodine test is used to test for the presence of starch. Starch will change color to an intense "blue-black" colour after the addition of aqueous solutions of the triiodide anion. To do it we can add Iodine-KI reagent to a solution or directly on a potato or other materials such as bread, crackers, or flour The reaction between amylose that present in lesser amounts and iodine is said to account for the intense color change seen.

An iodine test of a tomato plant leaf revealed that starch was present at 5:00 p.m. on a sunny afternoon in July. When a similar leaf from the same tomato plant was tested with iodine at 6:00 am the next morning, the test indicates that less starch was present in this leaf than in the leaf tested the day before. This reduction in starch content occurred because starch was

 • 1. changed directly into proteins
 • 2. transported out of the leaves through the guard cells
 • 3. transported downward toward the roots through tubes
 • 4. changed into simple sugars
