The Justices, in the US Supreme Court are nominated by the President and after they are found to be eligible the Senates approve them. The Justices serve in the office for their lifetime.

To limit the number of decisions not reaching a majority rule, the Court is structured with odd number of Justices. Having an odd number of Justices in the court obliterate the possibility of having even number of votes which may hinder in reaching the conclusion of a case.
