The assignment for this lesson is to read a passage and answer the following questions: What inference can you make from this pa
kramer

After reading the passage above, one can infer that it belongs to an article or an essay which purpose is to inform the reader about the population boom and its consequences (cause-effect writing). The writer developed the main event in the introduction of the passage and then added supporting sentences about the consequences of that main event. The population is growing in cities such as San Antonio, Phoenix, and Los Angeles and this event has serious effects on the desert environment of these cities mentioned earlier, being the most obvious one the water shortages. The reader can infer all this information thanks to the organization of the text and the words or connectors used. The organization that has been used by the writer is The Casual Chain (one effect is a cause of another effect, which in turn can become a cause of another effect, and so on) and some of the words/connectors chosen to describe the relationship of the events are “result”, “Because…,”, and “concern”.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi went to England for higher studies at the age of 19. His mother was apprehensive about young men going astray in western society. But her fears were allayed when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi swore not to touch meat, wine and women. He faced a lot of difficulties due to his vegetarianism.

Explanation:

In this excerpt, we should use the Past Simple, as the whole story refers to the past. Therefore, we should use verbs like went, was, faced, etc...

The construction go for something means try to achieve a goal, in this case, he tried to finish his higher studies.

e.g. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi went to England for higher studies at the age of 19.

The construction to be afraid/worried/apprehensive about + V+ -ing contains the verb with -ing at the end, as a part of this construction, so, in this case, we should change the verb form from go to going.

e.g. . His mother was apprehensive about young men going astray in western society.

But her fears were allayed when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi swore not to touch meat, wine and women.

In this sentence, we should use when instead of that, because when acts as a conjunction meaning at the time that.

We use the construction not to when we want to emphasize the absence of some action; in this case, that he will not touch meat, wine and women.

The construction a lot of refers to a large number or amount of things (in this case difficulties).

He faced a lot of difficulties due to his vegetarianism.

Describe in your own words the difference between Judge Danforth's reaction to the possibility that the girls were not truthful
andriy [413]

Answer:

judge danforth has staked his reputation as a representative of the law on the outcome of the salem witch trials. therefore, he cannot abide any result other than the condemnation of the accused. since the trials hinge on the girl's testimony (the word of abigail, betty and the others against the accused), he refuses to consider the possibility that they lied. one might even say that he is in denial; such a possibility would mean his end as a respected officer of the law. hale, on the other hand, as a man of god, cares more about the truth in absolute terms. he initially went along with the trials, but as his doubts grew he began to turn against them. he knows his reputation will suffer (or rather, it has already suffered) but, since he now believes the trials to be tainted, he fears for his soul because of his complicity in them. therefore, he is more open to the possibility that the girls lied, and argues forcefully to judge danforth against their testimony.
