This ruling came as a consequence of the case <em>Schenck v. United States (1919)</em>, in which the general secretary of the U.S. Socialist Party opposed the implementation of the military draft. He distributed pamphlets encouraging people to oppose the draft. The unanimous decision was that his words represented a clear and present danger to the country, and therefore his arrest was justified.

Bushidou is the Japanese term that refers to the codes of honour and values that samurai adhered to. Born out of Confucianism, Shinto and Zen Buddhism during the Edo period (1600-1878), they emphasize sincerity, flugality, loyalty, bravery and honour. During the Tokugawa Shogunate, some of these values became formalized as laws.

The colonial north was settled by religious separatists. They were hoping to create a new community so whole families came to the New England colonies. Most were middle to upper class citizens and were education especially in the Bible.
The colonial south was settled by investors, single men who were looking for work, and government officials. The colonies were economic companies with many indentured servants. Eventually the southern colonies also included black slaves for the labor source. To create stable settlements, young women and families were brought to the colonies.
