The warmhearted clown at the party was caring, but his performance was not very humorous.

The first sentence uses a compound sentence. In order to combine the sentences, a comma and a conjunction is necessary. In this case, the kindness of the clown is in contrast to his humorous nature. The words warmhearted and caring show that the clown was very nice. The detail about his performance not being humorous covers the fact that the speaker does not think that the clown was funny.

I did not think that the nice clown at the party was funny.

The second sentence is a simple version that combines all of the ideas without revising for any more-specific words.

Read the excerpt below and answer the question. Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box,
Sonbull [250]

Answer:

Backstory.

Explanation:

The references to stones in the story "The Lottery" creates the backstory of the whole story. The ritual of the lottery wherein a member of a particular household is stoned to death is like an annual sport stemming from Mr. Joe Summer's free time. Even though the villagers no longer remember the relevance of the rituals associated with the 'lottery', they still remember to use stones for the killings. And it was with stones that they used to hurl at Tessie Hutchinson, the unlucky victim of the lottery draw which her own husband had marked the slip the previous night.

Read this excerpt from "Crossing the Bar" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Which two lines are examples of a dependent clause?
barxatty [35]

Answer:

The correct answer is B)

Explanation:

A) First, a clause is an incomplete sentence or a group of words that can't stand alone or one that does not have meaning standing by itself.

B) Furthermore, it must have a verb and a subject.

A verb, if you recall is an action word while a subject is "<em>the person or thing being referred to</em>".

Looking at the clauses in option B we can see that they both meet the above conditions.

Let's see clause one - "<em>And may there be no </em><u><em>moaning</em></u><em> of t</em><u><em>he bar</em></u><em>, "</em>

It is clear that the verb here is "moaning" while the subject is "the Bar".

It's clear to see that these group of words meet the conditions given in A and B above because left by themselves, they make no meaning.

Let's take a look at the second clause:

"<em>When I put out to sea</em>,"

"I" here is the subject. It is a pronoun. A pronoun is simply a word that can be used instead of the noun. That is a noun can easily but inserted in the place of "I". Hence, we have "I" as the subject.

"<em>Put Out</em>"  here is a verb which means to relocate.

So "When I put out to sea"  also meets the conditions in A and B above.

Cheers!
