It's literal meaning. The denotation of a word is usually the most basic and plain meaning of the word, ie how the word would be interpreted without any context.

Denotation and connotation are both methods of describing the meaning of words. A word's denotation refers to its literal or primary meaning. Denotation can be defined as the explicit or direct meaning of a word, in opposition to the ideas, images or meanings associated to the word, that are more related to the connotation of the word or phrase.
