Read the passage from “The Beginnings of the Maasai.” Our relationship with Enkai is essential to the tribe. Enkai is neither ma

le nor female. The sky god is powerful, but can change from nurturing to vengeful depending on our behavior. Sometimes Enkai is Enkai Narok, the Black God, happy with us and blanketing the sky with dark clouds that pour out rain to nourish the plains. When angry, though, Enkai becomes Enkai Nonyokie—the Red God. In these times, the sun grows incredibly hot until the earth dries up and becomes barren. Because of this, we work to keep Enkai happy. Why is this excerpt a good example of a feature often found in a myth? It features a reference to the earth. It features a reference to the sky. It features a reference to the origin of the tribe. It features a reference to a supernatural being.

Which is the best comparison of the tone in these passages?
mina [271]

The complete question is:

1). Everywhere was a shadow of death. The farmers spoke of much illness among their families. In the town, the doctors had become more and more puzzled by new kinds of sickness appearing among their patients. There had been several sudden and unexplained deaths, not only among adults but even among children, who would be stricken suddenly while at play and die within a few hours.

2). No doubt these trees would make good lumber after passing through a sawmill, as George Washington after passing through the hands of a French cook would have made good food. But both for Washington and the tree that bears his name higher uses have been found.  Could one of these Sequoia-Kings come to town in all its godlike majesty so as to be strikingly seen and allowed to plead its own cause, there would never again be any lack of defenders.

Which is the best comparison of the tone in these passages?

a). Both passages have a dark, frightening tone.

b). Both passages have a somber tone, but the second is more somber.

c). While the first passage has a dark, horrifying tone, the tone of the second is much lighter.

d). While the first passage has a negative tone, the second has an even more negative tone.

Answer:

c). While the first passage has a dark, horrifying tone, the tone of the second is much lighter.

Explanation:

As per the question, the second option most adequately establishes a comparison of the tone between the two passages. In the first passage, the descriptions regarding 'shadow of death,' 'illness,' 'puzzled sickness,' etc. display a tragic and petrifying tone that the author aims to be perceived by the readers and evoke a sympathetic response towards the situation. While in the second passage, the tone is comparatively much bright and light as it includes details of comparison between George Washington and Sequoia trees and the investigation about the 'high use' of their names and majesty. Hence, <u>option c</u> correctly compares the author's distinct approaches in the two passages.

PilotLPTM [1.2K]

Answer:

B) A semicolon

Explanation:

A semicolon is a punctuation mark used to join two clauses together.. These clauses must be independent. These independent clauses are joined by a semicolon to form a complete sentence. On the other hand, a comma is used to separate clauses or objects in a sentence or phrase. A semicolon should not be used in place of a colon or comma. All three have their own duties. A colon is used when an emphasis is about to be made or when listing items. A hyphen is used to join two or more words but without spacing

An apostrophe is used when a word was omitted.

Elena L [17]

Answer:

It indicates that the gangsters are looking for vulnerable people.

It supports the idea that the gangsters are involved in criminal activities.

Explanation:

In Sonia Nazario's "Enrique's Journey", the protagonist Enrique left home on a quest to find his real mother who had left him to work in America. Feeling a sense of abandonment from his mother Lourdes, leaving him in Honduras, and his beloved uncle's death compelled him to try to reunite with his mother no matter what, thus his journey.

The given passage is from the chapter "Staying Awake" where Enrique along with others were atop the moving train trying to get to America. The excerpt reveals how those on the roof of the trains were targeted by the gangsters operating around the area. The vulnerable people end up being the target of these gangsters who are involved in illegal criminal activities, with the "<em>forgiving</em>" nature of the police in Chiapas. The author's use of the word "prowl" supports the dangerous manner in which these gangsters are involved, leading further to the suffering of others.
