This comes from the novel “<em><u>Uncle Tom’s Cabin</u></em>” written by <u>Harriet Beecher Stowe.</u>  Simon Legree is the cruel slave owner who sadistically dominates everyone without punishment. Tom is displayed as the Christ figure who suffers at the hand of his torturers. Simon is the Pontius Pilatus.
