I believe the best answers are:
- It draws readers into the argument and establishes that ideas apply to society. Jefferson first addresses the problem itself - establishing one's own identity, and governing one's own affairs. He wants everybody to pay attention to this argument and observe its political sense. Only later would he provide the context for this.
- It emphasizes that the principles involved are universal, not just American. The "self-evident truths" concern humanity, different people and nations, as well as every single individual on Earth. The fact that they "hold these truths to be self-evident" means that they, the colonists, are people who respect and protect free will because they have free will of their own, and they know how difficult it is to protect this basic right.

List three historical issues that have been used to debate the different interpretations of the Constitution. Then choose one of
Ivenika [448]

Brown Vs Board of Education sparked debate on civil rights as described in the Constitution.

Roe Vs Wade was about women's right to abortion.

Bush Vs Gore determined who won the election in Florida and ultimately the presidential election.

In the last case, state law in Florida required recount of ballots if the totals were very close. But Gore only requested recounts in four counties. FL Supreme Court ordered a statewide recount instead. US Supreme Court stepped in and ruled that FL court's action violated the Equal Protection Clause in the Constitution by using different standards of counting in different counties. The recount was stopped and Bush won.

aksik [14]
Thomas paine's common sense was important because it instigated the American colonist to fight for the independence.
The pamphlet of common sense was written in 1776, in the time which was shaping the American revolution war. The first battle of independence happened in 1775, yet there was no firm determination among some colonist who were hoping reconciliation of any kind with Britain, because there was no serious hatred towards the monarchy system.
But, in 1776, the pamphlet published where it stated ideas on why monarchy is bad model of governing system and American colonies must be free. Thus, the common sense published in 1776 build up independence sentiments, convincing the undecided colonies for independence. After six months of the common sense publication, independence was declared in July, 1776.
