The book is The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. The main character, Gregor Samsa, wakes up to discover he has turned into a giant insect and his transformation is never explained. All the members of the Samsa family treat the event as a random occurrence. They combine to give a distorted sense of reality.

The story reveals that Gregor has a feeling of estrangement prior to his transformation and how he felt emotionally distant from his family. The alienation caused by Gregor’s metamorphosis as an extension of the alienation he already felt as a person is what makes the situation very real.
