Huascar was an Inca, son of the Inca rule Huayna Capac. After his father's death, there was a Civil War between him and his brother Atahualpa. Different accounts exist about why the war started, but nonetheless Huascar was defeated and Atahualpa assumed the title of Inca and ruler of the empire. This happened shortly before Pizarro and the Spaniards arrived.
