1. Sri Lanka - Faced internal conflicts between ethnic groups after it achieved independence

Sri Lanka became independent from British rule in 1948, ever since it has faced internal conflicts between ethnic groups such as the Sinhalese (that constitutes the majority of the population), Tamil and Sri Lanka Moor.

2. Philippines - Was a colony of the United States before becoming independent in 1946

The Philippines was the U.S.'s first colony, it was acquired after defeating the Spanish in the Spanish-American war of 1898, as Spanish had been the ones who were ruling in the island. The U.S. officially gave the Philipines their independence in 1946 with the Treaty of Manila.

3. Myanmar- Was named Burma before it gained its freedom in 1948

When the colonists were ruling this nation, they called it "Burma", and it continued to have this name after gaining its independence until the military government took over the country and named it "Myanmar", in 1989.

Nowadays, that change of name is not recognized by the ethnic opposition parties and other countries like the U.S. and U.K. because they do not recognize the legitimacy of the ruling military government or its authority to rename the country. However, there are countries that do recognize it, and sometimes both names are used interchangeably.

katrin [286]
I would say 30,000 cause all the next developments were from the 1860's forward and that is when huge growth happened, after 1860.
