A.The sentence makes it seem like the horse is laughing in the face of danger. D.The participial phrase “laughing in the face of danger” is modifying the wrong noun.  E.The participial phrase “laughing in the face of danger” should be closer to “cowboy.”

In the sentence, "laughing in the face of danger" is a participial phrase describing a noun. The problem is that the noun it describes is horse. This makes it seem as though the horse is "laughing in the face of danger." However, the cowboy is the one doing the laughing as he jumps off the horse. In order to fix this error, the participial phrase needs to move closer to "cowboy". The sentence should be: The cowboy, laughing in the face of danger, jumped from the horse.

Read the excerpt below and answer the question.
Norma-Jean [14]
Janie feels so moved because she feels as if she's been 'called' to witness this miraculous moment. She feels time slow and can actually hear the voice of nature. As she takes in the "revelation", she then becomes sad and pained, clearly affected by a memory.

Naturalist writers used setting to enhance the theme of unpredictability in nature. Which four phrases in this excerpt from step
nata0808 [166]

The phrases that reflect mercilessness of the sea are:

1-"Their eyes glanced level, and were fastened upon the waves that swept toward them."

They were glancing at the level of the sea changing by the waves, and fastened to fell the security of grabbing to something.

2-"These waves were of the hue of slate, save for the tops, which were of foaming white, and all of the men knew the colors of the sea."

Describing the color of the waves as hue and mentioning that they all knew the colors of the sea, we can determine that these dark waves are pretty scary.

3-"The horizon narrowed and widened, and dipped and rose, and at all times its edge was jagged with waves that seemed thrust up in points like rocks. "

The description of how the movement of the boat and the sea changed the view of the horizon, as well as the comparison made of them thrusting like rocks let's the reader know how rough the sea is.

4-"These waves were most wrongfully and barbarously abrupt and tall, and each froth-top was a problem in small-boat navigation."

The description of how the waves were abrupt and tall let's the reader determine how harsh it is, as well as how it was uneasy to navigate with the froth-top, having a small boat.

stiv31 [10]

Answer:

1) A nun looked at the narrator's house as if it were a terrible place to live.

2) She is the more carefree child, the one who has her own opinions.

  • She is using the wild description of her hair to imply that she is also wild. It wouldn't be choice B, because that's too literal; and C and D don't make sense.

3) She feels like her family is holding her back from opportunities and experiences.

  • If she had stopped with the balloon, it would have been a happy metaphor. But a balloon tied to an anchor? Can't fly, can't go anywhere with the anchor holding it down.

4) She and Nenny's laughter is loud and grabs the attention of anyone nearby.

  • She's contrasting it with Rachel and Lucy. It's not orthodox, it's carefree and noisy.

5) She feels ashamed that she and Nenny have no money to buy anything.

  • Nenny asks how much the music box is, but Gil doesn't even offer it because he knows they don't have any money. Esperanza knows, though.

6) She wishes she had a different name than Esperanza.

  • The author is contrasting the two worlds, the hispanic and american, that they live between. Her name is hard to pronounce, and she connects it with sadness and longing.
