When the Stage Manager points out the graves of the Civil War veterans, he again pushes the boundaries of his character with his comment “And they went and died about it.” The reader can not be sure if Wilder is demonstrating pride of country or opposition to war in general. The audience is left to infer whether Wilder felt any cause was worth dying for.
