Read the excerpt from Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. The major was a little man with upturned mustaches. He had been in the war

in Libya and wore two wound-stripes. He said that if the thing went well he would see that I was decorated. I said I hoped it would go well but that he was too kind. I asked him if there was a big dugout where the drivers could stay and he sent a soldier to show me. I went with him and found the dugout, which was very good. The drivers were pleased with it and I left them there. In the excerpt, what does the diction, or words used to express an idea, show about the narrator? It makes the narrator seem disorganized. It makes the narrator seem discliplined. It makes the narrator seem confused. It makes the narrator seem lively.

Answer:

it makes the narrator seem disciplined.

Explanation:

The role of diction in literature is to convey a certain tone, through the choice of the author of the words, can also convey a large amount of general feelings of the writer to the work or to a specific character.

The role of diction in this text is to show that the character is disciplined and organized since he treats his officers with respect and asks for the information he needs instead to leave and try to figure things out for himself and end up causing some problem.

Nana76 [90]

Answer:

These word choices highlight the tone of irony.

Explanation:

The question above is about the poem "War is Kind" written by Stephen Crane. The entire poem has a strong tone of verbal irony, which can first be found in the poem speaker's statements about why women should not cry because the men they love were killed in war, because war is a good and benevolent thing. This characteristic of war contains strong irony, since nothing good and benevolent would kill anyone.

Verbal irony is reinforced by the use of contradictory ideas like those found in the question above, where the author mixes the characteristics that war promoters impose on themselves and the real characteristics among them.

torisob [31]

Hi!

The answer is C. What Churchill accomplished with his speech was  addressing the audience's concerns by outlining ways Britain will overcome Germany.

Churchill gave a speech where he had to addressed his country's fears of going to war. In his speech, he made sure to reassure them that they were doing the right thing by going to war, as well as assure them that Britan would have no problem overcoming Germany. Through this speech, he convinced people that Britain could overcome Germany and he got the poeple's support.

Answer:

The correct option described second is <em>"The tone is the same, but the word choice is less formal, probably for a  younger reading audience."</em>

Explanation:

Replacing <em>"of the Victorian era"</em> with <em>"during a period of time known as the Victorian era" </em>shows less formality and a bit more explanation for younger readers.

Also <em>"distinguished" </em>is replaced with <em>"respected"</em> which is less formal and easier to be understood by younger readers.

The replacement of <em>"Her  poetry influenced ..... and Emily Dickinson"</em> in first version with this long sentence <em>"Her poetry  was very  ............. by Ms. Browning"</em>  in second version reduces formality to make it easier to understand for younger audience.
