Pratap’s chief ambition was to catch fish. He managed to waste a lot of time this way, and might be seen almost any afternoon so

employed. It was thus most often that he met Subha. Whatever he was about, he liked a companion; and, when one is trying to catch fish, a silent companion is best of all. Pratap respected Subha for her taciturnity, and, as everyone called her Subha, he showed his affection by calling her Su. I think the author's development of Pratap's character in the story in the given excerpt above would be seen through the writer's use of the character's point of view and attitude. It can be clearly seen that Pratap didn't like people that much and preferred a taciturn companion with the hobby he had which is fishing.

Answer: But to me, my mother's English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It's my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery. That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world.

In this passage, Tan is giving us information about her mother's speech. She uses various examples to convey what the mother's English sounds like and the kind of things she can accomplish with it. However, it is at the very end where Tan explains where her own views of the world come from. She argues that her perspective, her views on the world and her beliefs all come from her "mother tongue," which is the way her mother speaks English.
