I had a rough weekend when my cousin Orian stayed with us. He is the most negative person I've ever met. Every time I made a sug

gestion about something we could do, he told me five reasons why it wouldn't be fun. How exhausting! When he left this morning, it was a huge relief. As Oscar Wilde, the famous playwright, says, "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go." I've never known anyone this applies to more than Orian! How can you tell that this paragraph uses a quotation? Check all that apply. It tells an interesting story. It talks about a specific person. It uses quotation marks. It gives the name of the speaker. It includes what Orian says.

Answer:

  • It uses quotation marks
  • It gives the name of the speaker

Explanation:

A quotation is the repetition of one expression as part of another, particularly when the expression quoted is well known or explicitly attributed by citation to its original source, and is indicated by quotation marks and quoting the name of the author.

In this text, the quotation happens in: " <em>As Oscar Wilde, the famous playwright, says, "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.""</em>

Read the excerpt from act 3 of A Doll's House.
docker41 [41]

Answer:

<em> </em><em>The conflict between Nora and Helmer shows how  gender roles were defined, as Helmer has complete  control over everything, including what the couple  discusses.</em>

Explanation:

<em>Doll`s House</em> written by Henrik Ibsen gives us exact social picture of that age. Nora and Torvald Helmer are married. He has a high position in society and he is the leading man of the house. Nora`s role is to be sweet, pretty wife with whom he can show off to the society. Their roles are predestined with expectations of society, if they want to be accepted, they have to play them. Helmer calls Nora with names like <em>squirrel</em> or <em>little bird</em>, in one moment he even marks her as his pet who spends a lot of money. He decides what she will eat or dress or even talk. We can say that Nora even uses her inferior position to get some power. She acts like a damsel in distress so to challenge him to help her in some meaningless activities in which he will feel like a man in charge, but for the biggest part of the play, she was not aware that using her subordinate position for some little and short term pleasures leaves her in that same position which is just being someone`s mannequin.

How does the use of the word transformed support the claim in this passage?
Lera25 [3.4K]

From the 1750s on, sugar transformed how Europeans ate. Chefs who served the wealthy began to divide meals up. Where sugar had previously been used either as a decoration (as in the wedding feast) or as a spice to flavor all courses, now it was removed from recipes for meat, fish, and vegetables and given its own place—in desserts. Dessert as the extremely sweet end to the meal was invented because so much sugar was available. But the wealthy were not the only ones whose meals were changing. Sugar became a food, a necessity, and the foundation of the diet for England's poorest workers.

It indicates that the addition of sugar was a significant change to Europeans' diets.

Answer: Option D.

<u>Explanation:</u>

In the paragraph that has been shown above, the way the Europeans ate in the 1750s and the change in their way of eating has been talked about. It shows that there has been addition of sugar in their diet.

Earlier sugar was only used as a way of decoration or as a spice to flavor up all the courses. But later the intake of sugar increased a lot in the diet of the Europeans and it became a necessity, it became a food.
