<u>Answer:</u>

The passage indicates non-existence of woman's own identity in that era of Chinese history. This is revealed by the fact that the Hsiang Lin's wife is never referred to by her own name.

<u>Explanation:</u>

After becoming a widow, Hsiang Lin's wife's social standing in the society is reflected by two incidents.

<em>1. The owner's disapproval to hire Hsiang Lin's wife as a maid servant. </em>

<em>2. The forced re-marriage of Hsiang Lin's wife by her mother-in-law in lieu of money. </em>

Hsiang Lin's wife is considered unworthy of living a decent life without a husband.

The story of "<em>New Year's Sacrifice</em>", relates to the life of a woman who suffers all through her life and the consequences in her later years. She thinks about how the traumatic events of her life are going to affect her in the afterlife.

The passage of Lin´s wife is a condemnation of traditional Chinise ideas. She lost her first husband and as a widow, she was considered by Chinise Society as a marginal or second-class citizen.

The woman is forced to marry again and she tries to escape in desperation.

The reader concludes that simply there are things that are not right in our society.

04.04 Jefferson Brings Change!—411 File
Delvig [45]

Answer:

Jefferson Brings Change!—411 File

American voters wanted a non-Federalist president in the 1800 election, but Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr both won 73 electoral votes, so the House of Representatives took a vote and declared Jefferson the winner.

Explanation:

In "Somebody wanted, but so" sentence constructions, the different actors and their roles are clearly spelt out.  The elements are Character, Motivation/Goal, Conflict, and Resolution/Outcome.

The character figure is the subject.  "American voters" is the character and the subject of the sentence.  Their goal is for "a non-Federalist president in the 1800 election."  This is their motivation for voting.

The conflict is followed by the conjunction, "but."  In this case, the conflict is that "but Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr both won 73 electoral votes."

Resolution:  To resolve the conflict, "the House of Representatives took a vote and declared Jefferson the winner."  This is the resolution of the conflict.

The outcome is the declaration of Jefferson as the winner.

Thomas Jefferson was a Federalist president while Aaron Burr was the non-Federalist president that the majority of American voters wanted but could not overwhelmingly vote for, according to the electoral college system.  This caused a tie that was decided by the House of Representatives.

What aspects of buying and selling of slaves does Northup single out for condemnation?
Arturiano [62]
The degrading show and presentation of slaves--Soloman Northrup's description of the slave auction shows his disgust for the examination of slaves as if they were horses on parade. The act takes away humanity and creates property.

Northrup describes slaves having to open their mouths to be inspected. Buyers would inspect the bodies of slaves looking for marks or physical attributes they needed in a slave. The process includes cleaning up slaves to help improve the value.
