Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World. Sugar is different from honey. It offers a stronger sweet flavor, and like steel

or plastic, it had to be invented. In the Age of Sugar, Europeans bought a product made thousands of miles away that was less expensive than the honey from down the road. That was possible only because sugar set people in motion all across the world—millions of them as slaves, in chains; a few in search of their fortunes. A perfect taste made possible by the most brutal labor: That is the dark story of sugar. How do the details in this passage support the authors’ purpose? The comparison of honey to sugar production helps persuade readers that honey is better than sugar. The details about sugar’s dependency on slavery help inform readers about why sugar was inexpensive. The details about the sugar’s strong flavor entertain the reader with stories of how people invented sugar. The comparison of the invention of sugar to steel helps persuade readers that sugar is easier to make than steel.

Question: How do the details in this passage support the authors’ purpose?

Answer: B. The details about sugar’s dependency on slavery help inform readers about why sugar was inexpensive.

The authors of this book “Sugar Changed the World”, Marc Aronson and his wife Marina Budhos wanted to inform the readers about the many wasted lives, sufferings from slavery and long journeys it took to produce sugar for Europe’s sweet tooth in order to “enjoy” such a cheaper product than the honey they had closer at hand. It was cheap because in slavery you do not pay the workers.

lakkis [162]

To complete your question, the answer choice is as follows

a. Our Country has worked hard to provide equal rights for people.

b. Rosa Parks was a great American civil rights leader.

c. Freedom and equality are worth great sacrifice.

d Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white woman.

The sentence that best represents a speech’s theme is "Freedom and equality are worth great sacrifice". This implies the correct answer is C.

Further Explanation

A speeches theme should be general and be very concise enough to describe the details of a speech without giving the full details of the content of the speech. The speech theme should be centered mainly on the core values and the topics to be discussed.

A speeches theme must also be the subject that should be developed in a speech and from the options provided only “Freedom and equality are worth great sacrifice” serves this particular purpose.

Also, carefully analyzing other answer choices, you will see they are not issues that should be developed instead they are parts of the speech that will support the argument on the subject.

However, the introduction of your speech is very important mainly because it points out what your speech is all about. It tells the audience or the listeners the purpose of your speech.
