Analyze the elements of modernist poetry in Elizabeth Bishop’s poem "The Fish."
iVinArrow [24]

In her poem “The Fish,” Bishop describes her emotions when she catches a big fish and observes it carefully. The poet’s imagist style is found in her detailed description of the fish that she caught:

its pattern of darker brown

was like wallpaper:

shapes like full-blown roses

stained and lost through age.

Instead of using a specific rhyme scheme to give the poem a musical quality, Bishop uses literary devices, such as alliteration, to create rhythm in her poem:

still crimped from the strain and snap

She also creates a musical rhythm within the lines by using assonance:

frayed and wavering,

a five-haired beard of wisdom

trailing from his aching jaw.

I stared and stared

Whoever could find out a fair, cheap and easy method of making these children sound useful members of the common-wealth, would d
Lena [83]

Answer:

D. He doesn't always agree with the choices of who is honored by the public.

Explanation:

This excerpt is from Jonathan Swift's (1667 – 1745) "A Modest Proposal"<em> - A Modest Proposal for preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the publick.</em>

Option C is also similar to Option D, but option D better explain the situations.

From this excerpt and according to the options provided we can infer that the authors (Jonathan Swift) wants to stress on the importance of helping those children who are burden on their poor parents and country. He wants to say that this would be a real service to the public, and one which should really be appreciated.

In another sense there is also a satire in this piece of the excerpt in the usage and stress on words "fair, cheap and easy". Jonathan Swift is satirizing government's economy-centered policies. Government wants a fair, cheap and easy solution of issues which should be government's priority to solve at every cost. In fact this point of view of satire in this excerpt is more correct than the options provided.

Think about the ending of “A Retrieved Reformation.” What can you infer about Ben Price’s opinion of Jimmy Valentine? Does bin P
juin [17]

Answer:

“A Retrieved Reformation”

1. At the beginning of the story, Ben Price rightly thinks that the bank robberies under investigation are committed by Jimmy Valentine, because they bear his signature style.

2. Towards the end of the story, Ben Price's opinion changed completely.  Despite Jimmy Valentine's changed identity, Ben Price, correctly recognized Jimmy Valentine after the latter confirmed his true identity by unknowingly demonstrating his stylish ingenuity by opening the locked door.  Since, Jimmy Valentine decided to surrender himself for arrest, Ben Price must have concluded that Jimmy was actually a changed man, especially now that he had fallen in love with Annabel.

Explanation:

O. Henry, the author of “A Retrieved Reformation” published the short story in 1903.  The story narrated how an ex-convict, who was wanted for a series of bank robberies, suddenly repented and relinquished the life of crime because he had fallen in love with a woman.
