Answer:

In the poem "We Wear the Mask," Paul Laurence Dunbar voices his repressed anger and frustration toward American society. He repeats the title phrase three times in the poem, using the words mask and we to show that he is speaking about a common experience that the African American community shares. The first use of the phrase is matter-of-fact. In the second stanza, the statement is followed by a period, which shows resignation. However, at the end of the poem, Dunbar almost shouts the phrase defiantly. The mask seems to become something he wears proudly. Through this gradual emphasis on the phrase, Dunbar could be implying that African Americans used the "mask" to hide their suffering and gain a kind of victory against society.

Answer:

In the poem "We Wear the Mask," Paul Laurence Dunbar voices his repressed anger and frustration toward American society. He repeats the title phrase three times in the poem, using the words mask and we to show <u>that people hide their true feelings behind a false expression.</u>

The first use of the phrase is matter-of-fact. In the second stanza, the statement is followed by a period, which shows resignation. However, at the end of the poem, Dunbar almost shouts the phrase defiantly. The mask seems to become something he wears proudly. Through this gradual emphasis on the phrase, Dunbar could be implying that the world should only be allowed to “see us, while/ We wear the mask.” This suggests something beyond merely dissembling for the sake of duplicity or dishonesty.

This mask that “grins and lies” is hiding the existence of excruciating misery and suffering. The speaker says, “We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries/ To thee from tortured souls arise

Read this excerpt from "Crossing the Bar" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Which two lines are examples of a dependent clause?
barxatty [35]

Answer:

The correct answer is B)

Explanation:

A) First, a clause is an incomplete sentence or a group of words that can't stand alone or one that does not have meaning standing by itself.

B) Furthermore, it must have a verb and a subject.

A verb, if you recall is an action word while a subject is "<em>the person or thing being referred to</em>".

Looking at the clauses in option B we can see that they both meet the above conditions.

Let's see clause one - "<em>And may there be no </em><u><em>moaning</em></u><em> of t</em><u><em>he bar</em></u><em>, "</em>

It is clear that the verb here is "moaning" while the subject is "the Bar".

It's clear to see that these group of words meet the conditions given in A and B above because left by themselves, they make no meaning.

Let's take a look at the second clause:

"<em>When I put out to sea</em>,"

"I" here is the subject. It is a pronoun. A pronoun is simply a word that can be used instead of the noun. That is a noun can easily but inserted in the place of "I". Hence, we have "I" as the subject.

"<em>Put Out</em>"  here is a verb which means to relocate.

So "When I put out to sea"  also meets the conditions in A and B above.

Cheers!

Based on the passage you just read, what conclusion can you draw about the cultural values of the Iroquois? Write a paragraph. I
bogdanovich [222]

Answer:

You can infer that traditions are very important, since they stop fighting for such an important matter in order to send away their mother in the proper way of their culture.

It is also very interesting to see how they respect and protect the tree that, it seems, holds the essence of their loved ones in many ways.

It also seems that crop is just as important to their culture as family is.

Explanation: It's right on Edge, I just did it.

What type of figurative language is the car chugged around the mountain
marissa [1.9K]

Chugged is the main word that should give it away. It is kind of exaggerating the car going up the mountain. I assume it would be a hyperbole.

Hope I helped!
