In Hamlin Garland's " The Return of a Private", the story occurred in Midwest America specifically Wisconsin. The dialect, clothing, and landscape emphasis gave local colors to the viewers.

Mark Twain's "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras Country' is similar to the previous piece because the setting is also from the West. The difference between the two stories is that the latter compares cultures of the East and the West.

In Hamlin Garland's "The Return of a Private", the story takes place in the Midwest America, particularly in Wisconsin. Garland describes people and places precisely, especially the clothing, landscape and the dialect. The praise of author's work is indicated with the application of the style in a way that he created such a realistic depiction out of ordinary characters and situations.

Mark Twain's "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras Country' story also takes place in Midwest America. The story compares the East and the West cultures with Mark Twain's successful writing style in a sense of the mixture of dialect, delay, tone and absurd detail.

Answer:

<u>D. "I must think over things for myself and get to understand them."</u>

Explanation:

Living by what other people say, or think and what books say is living a lie because it is not based on what the character really thinks or wants.

Thinking thinks over by herself is being truthfull to the ideas and wishes she can built, and no longer by what other people tell her to do. Being more than a wife and a mother, means there is more to Nora in life than those things.
