The speech has been recognized as real masterpiece of literary devices, but probably one of the best studied has been the allusion to historical events that Kennedy uses as markers for American greatness and American influence on the global arena. Although not always direct, sometimes more subtly mentioned, but still very recognizable, Kennedy makes allusion to three events of American history that have marked the nation and turned it into what it was on that date, 20th January, 1961. These three historical events were: the Civil War, the American Revolution, and the principles set forth for America by the Declaration of Independence.
