On April 14, Nicolás de Lafora, his engineer and mapmaker, accompanied him in Durango, keeping a diary of the trip, as did Rubí himself. A copy of Rubí's previously unpublished journal was uncovered in 1989, when it was contained in a volume of bound documents collected by the Barker Texas History Centre.
