In the Sonoran desert of the southwestern United States, scientists observed that population clusters of a small cactus were pro

nounced around nests of desert woodrats. Given this spatial relationship, they began to think the woodrat was related to the seeding of these cactus plants. After years of counting and observing woodrat nests and nearby cactus plants, scientists collected woodrat droppings for laboratory analysis to determine whether they contained cactus seeds. They also collected the droppings and transported them to other areas to see if this would bring about new population clusters of the cactus. Scientists then programmed the data they had collected into a computer. A computer program enabled them to predict that increases in the woodrat population would result in corresponding increases in the cactus population, and likewise, a decrease in the number of woodrats would signal an impending decrease in cactus. Which phase of the study could be described as modeling?

Answer:

The answer to the question: Which phase of the study could be described as modeling? Would be: when they formulated the thesis: "Given this spatial relationship, they began to think the wood rat was related to the seeding of these cactus."

Explanation:

Research is a long process that has a lot of steps to be fulfilled. The first, is the gathering of information that will provide the necessary groundwork for a thesis to be formed. Once this happens, researchers must formulate a thesis, or a question, for which they will take a series of steps that will provide an answer to this question, or the thesis. Probably one of the most important steps is the modeling, meaning, knowing what it is that the study will look for (the research question, or thesis) and where the study is pointing (its purpose). In the case of this question, that particular portion of the study comes when the scientist have already been observing a cluster population of cactus in relation to the nests of wood rats and then these led to the formulation of the statement: Given this spatial relationship, they began to think...." After this statement, the researchers organized their steps, and efforts, to find the answer that supported, or negated, the statement.

Answer:

The modeling represents the phase of the study called "experimentation".

Explanation:

In the study shown above, modeling was done when scientists manipulated computer programs to predict that increases in the wood mouse population would result in corresponding increases in the cactus population and, likewise, a decrease in the number of wood mice. -wood would signal an imminent decline in cacti

This phase represents a prediction of the results, but it cannot yet be classified as a result analysis, because it is part of the establishment of the experiment, being part of a phase of the study called "experimentation".

Which of the following blood type genotypes result in the same phenotype? a) I^A I^A and I^A I^B b) I^B I^B and I^B i c) I^B I^B
Lady bird [3.3K]
The letter I is just there. Blood type problems will usually have

I^{A}I^{A} and I^{A}i = blood type A
I^{B}I^{B} and I^{B}i = blood type B
I^{A}I^{B} would be blood type AB
ii would be blood type O.

So the answer would be B since B is the only option that the offspring would be only blood type B, which is the same as their parents.

Seasons of Change Activity Worksheet—Disappearing Marine Iguanas Case Study
baherus [9]

Answer:

1. Using the map and the minimal knowledge that Liz has at this point, propose three different hypotheses regarding the sudden high mortality of marine iguanas. Record your answers in the worksheet and post your hypotheses to the 03.01 class discussion board before proceeding to the next question. (3 points possible)

Hypotheses One: Iguanas are adapted to hot/warm weather, so the weather changed could have affected them.

Hypotheses Two: There was not enough shelter for the iguanas so they started disappearing.

Hypotheses Three: A new species has come close to where the iguanas live and taken them out.

2. Look at your classmates’ hypotheses on the discussion board. Choose one hypothesis that seems most likely to you. Provide the student name and hypothesis and tell what evidence you would need to support (or refute) it. (3 points possible) Carter Spiers, Hypothesis 1. there was a lot of rain and it washed at the iguanas away. We would have to dive into the water/ ocean and find iguana bodies to be able to prove that this is true.

3. Given what you know at this point about marine iguanas and the abiotic effects of ENSO, develop two possible directions of research that Liz should pursue to understand exactly why the iguanas suffered such a high mortality. Keep in mind that you need to consider indirect effects. While environmental temperature does change metabolic rates of ectotherms, the iguanas are exposed to a wide range of temperatures as they feed and bask on the lava. Direct mortality in response to a temperature change of a couple of degrees is unlikely. (3 points possible)

Possible Research Direction One: The climate event caused a lot more rainfall which then made it very hard for the iguanas to reach their food source.

Possible Research Direction Two: The temperatures raised very high causing the iguanas to absorb a extreme about of extra heat, which eventually made them very lazy and stopped defending their self from predators.

4. Choose one of those directions of research and determine what data you would need to find to support your ideas. (2 points possible) Specific data of the extreme amounts of rainfall.
