Feudalism shaped social structure by dividing three classes: a king, a noble class, and a peasant class. In the Middle ages, all the land belonged to the king who gave the land to nobles for agriculture to generate wealth for him. The land toiled by peasants (serfs) who were tied to the land and forbidden to leave without their lord's permission.

Ogden is considered a landmark supreme court case on the issue of the Interstate Commerce Clause. Aaron Ogden was given an exclusive license to operate a shipping business within the State of New York. He sued a man named Thomas Gibbons, who ran a competing shipping business between New Jersey and New York City, claiming that Gibbon's operations in the State of New York were illegal.<span>The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Thomas Gibbons.
