The right answer is "Rifle cartridges that supposedly were greased in animal fat were introduced".

The most well-known reason for the sepoys revolt was the use of animal fat in the manufacture (waterproofing) of the cartridges of the new Lee-Enfield rifle. The sipals had been trained to tear the cartridge with their teeth to insert the contents into the rifle; Hindu and Muslim soldiers suspected that fat used was tallow (from oxen, abhorrent to Hindus) or lard (pork, disgusting to Muslims), and in 1857 they refused to use the new cartridges. The British began to manufacture them with beeswax or vegetable oil, but rumors continued.
