1. Corn requires 22 inches of water for a successful crop. A farmer that has a 200-acre farm is in a drought and receives only 2

inches of rain throughout the year.
(a) Calculate how many gallons of water the farmer will need to purchase to be able to irrigate his crops. Recall that 60% of the water applied to a field through irrigation is lost. (An acre-foot is a common unit for measuring volumes of water, typically used in irrigation calculations. One acre-foot is the volume of water sufficient to cover an acre of land to a depth of 1 foot, approximately 325,851 U.S. gallons.) Show all work.

(b) Discuss two effects on a small stream if the farmer were to pump irrigation water from it, decreasing the flow rate of the stream.

(c) Discuss three ways the farmer could lessen the 60% loss of water while irrigating the farm.

Answer: Total volume of water corn needs= 22 inches x 200 acres = 1.833 fts x 200 acres = 366.6 acre-ft

Precipitation volume of water = 2 inches x 200 acres = 0.167 fts x 200 acres = 33.4 acre-ft

Water without lost in irrigation = difference in value = 366.6 – 33.4 = 333.2 acre-ft

The 40% used in irrigation as 60% waste is 333.2 acre-ft water.

Volume of water needed to be purchased = 333.2 * (100/40) = 833 acre-ft = 271433883 gallons (Ans)

[1 acre-ft = 325851 gallons]

The flow rate of water will decrease if the farmer has to pump water from a small stream.

b) Two effects on a small stream will be as follow-

1) There will be flow of ground water from the ground to the small stream.

2) Run-off rate will be higher to feed the small stream. So residence time of the water in the catchment will go down.

C) Ways that farmer could lessen 60% loss of water in irrigation

1) The farmer should increase the clay amount of the soil. Hence, water storing capability will be strengthened.

2) Increase the spatial density of plant can utilise more water to lessen the loss.

3) The drainage density should be decreased to lessen the loss of water and increasing the water-storage capacity of the farm.

zepelin [54]

Answer:

The answer is Native Bengalis and English rule

Explanation:

The fifth paragraph addresses how the Bengali people are ruled by the English but have little actual contact with them. Shiraj and Altaf’s amusement at Altaf’s being mistaken for an Englishman reflects their awareness of the significant cultural differences between the two groups and of the conflict those differences imply. Although Altaf is Bengali and is returning home, at this moment he embodies some of this conflict within his own person: “no one would expect a Bengali man” to arrive in a motorboat as he does, and he looks and dresses like an Englishman or European despite the fact that he “would have been more comfortable travelling in a lungi.”

trapecia [35]

Answer: A. The charge will be due on the next bill. The charge was already billed as reflected in Everett ’s credit card statement. However, since he has immediately lodged his complaint to the bank about the unfamiliar charge, his payment for the said charge was deferred while it is being investigated.  The bank validated his complaint by sending him the copy of his signature previously authorizing the charge. Since his complaint is not valid, Everett must pay the charge which will be due on the next bill.

A. Describe TWO ways that the process of globalization has contributed to similarities between the cultural landscapes shown in
nata0808 [166]

One way of technology advancement that has led to similarities in the two pictures is the idea of long-lasting lights or LED lights. In the pictures, both cities have numerous big TV ads that require a lot of light to make sure it stays bright and appealing. Through the invention of LED lights, light bulbs can now last longer and won’t have to worry people about frequently changing light fixtures. This allows for the bright lights advertisements in New York City and Tokyo. Another technological advancement in both photos is the fact of how both landscapes came to look like each other. This is through advances in communication such as social media and television. The popular landscape of Times Square in New York was definitely posted on the internet or showcased on the news and people around the world found it fascinating. The City of Tokyo then decided to have Shibuya Crossing look the same too to attract tourists as well. The cultural pattern of Times Square then diffused to other cities. Advances in communication technology has caused similarities in many cultural landscapes, especially from New York City to Tokyo.

Increased internet access has contributed to convergence in cultures through many platforms such as social media and messaging. When different countries all have access to the same internet program, people from each country can communicate and converge their cultures. For example, popular posts on social media of a fashion trend in Japan can lead to the same fashion trend in the United States. And since other countries can also see that post on the internet, they might start to follow that fashion trend too. The Japan fashion culture has then diffused through many parts of the world because more people across the globe have increased internet access.

The way an ethnic food can become popular in menu items across the globe is thorough relocation diffusion. An ethnic food may be introduced to a new country and the people there will come to like it and possibly to change to their preferences. For example, pizza was a dish invented in Italy, therefore it is an ethnic food for Italy. People from different parts of the world came to Italy, tried the pizza, and decided to have that meal in their country too. Pizza is now very popular, especially in the United States and people in the United States have also changed the pizza and made other flavors like Hawaiian for their liking. A widespread menu item becomes popular also by stimulus diffusion, since people are changing the original recipe of the pizza and making it gluten free or vegan. Any ethnic food can become a popular global dish by relocating to another country and satisfying the people there with that particular dish.
