Grendel was a monstrous character from the Anglo Saxon poem Beowulf described as a creature of darkness, devoured humans and cursed by God.

Explanation:

Grendel was a monstrous character from the Anglo Saxon poem Beowulf described as a creature of darkness, who devoured humans and cursed by God.

Grendel, a descendant of Cain, was feared by everyone in Heorot but defeated by Beowulf.

Grendel was harrowed by songs sung in the mead-hall in Heorot built by King Hrothgar. He attacked the mead-hall every night, killing and consuming the inhabitants, for twelve years. Beowulf was warmly welcomed by King Hrothgar, who came to Heorot to fight the monster and destroy him. He and other warriors slept in the mead-hall awaiting Grendel. As soon as he opened the doors of the mead-hall with his fist, he killed and devoured the first warrior. As soon he advanced towards the second warrior, he was attacked by him as the warrior was Beowulf himself. With no weapon or armor Beowulf fought with mighty strength as he believed that God had given him to fight the evil. Beowulf defeated Grendel who was wounded badly and later on died. He triumphed the defeat of Grendel's mother too. At the ninth hour Beowulf returned back to Heorot and was showered with gifts.
