The draft lottery was the system used to determine which American man would be called to military service during the Vietnam War. It was carried by the Selective Service System of the United States on December 1, 1969. The lottery was based on one's birth date, and only men born from 1944 to 1950 could be selected. Each day of the month had an assigned number, for example, if you had been born on September 14, you would've been assigned the number 001.
