Mrs. Peters being married to the sheriff always choose to follow the law. she always apologise for the behavior of the men because they are only doing their duty. Mrs. Peters also understands loneliness and the world of the female domestic. So therefore, her statement rings with sense of sad irony because she knows that the law does not protect women. The law is constructed to always favor the male.
