Answer: that Mr. Hawkins was a rich landowner.

The description of a big, white house is a reference to the old houses that were found in the plantations of the South. In this case, by telling us that the house of Mr. Hawkins was big and white, the author is trying to tell us that Mr. Hawkins was a rich landowner.

Which sentence contains a misplaced modifier?
Dvinal [7]

Answer:

The answer is sentence number one.

Explanation:

Every word in a sentence has a meaning. Some of them modify the main word. Misplaced modifier is, as its name suggests, such a word modifying not the word its meant to, but a completely different word. Therefore it is misplaced in a sentence. This changes the meaning of a whole or a part of a sentence.

Having this in mind we see that phrase a gold man's watch from the first sentence has illogical meaning. So looking at this phrase we could interpret it as a watch that belongs to a gold man, which is highly unlikely. Usually a misplaced modifier is corrected by simply changing the order of the words, which means that in this case the phrase should say: man`s gold watch.

Other sentences from the text do not have ambiguous meaning such this.

Read the sentence. In what ways does the underlined clause add variety and meaning to the sentence? Check all that apply.
Flauer [41]

Answer:

The correct answers are:

- It adds detail about the photographs.

- It tells the reader which photographs are being discussed.

- It creates a compound-complex sentence.

Explanation:

First of all, the underlined clause adds some details about the photographs; that the photographs are faded and cracked. It also reveals to us that the writer refers to the photographs he stored in the attic, so we get one additional information about the photographs.

As we previously indicated, this is a compound-complex sentence, which is modifying the main noun by adding more information about photographs. In our example, this sentence is composed of a compound sentence and a complex sentence.

Read the excerpt from Act III, scene i of Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio: Thou! why, thou wilt quarrel with a man that hath a hair m
gladu [14]
Mercutio and Benvolio are the opposite like night and day. Benvolio is peace seeking and gentle, whereas Mercutio will fight and yell and duel until the day he dies (literally) Mercutio is mocking the reasons for quarrels towards Benvolio and it is humorous because it is the exact opposite of Benvolio's nature to do what Mercutio accuses him of. This, in a way, illustrates the close friendship between the two men.
