We know this when we see that she sees what kind of clothes does Mrs. Wright have to wear, what her kitchen looks like, what her broken stove is like, and generally how bad the standard of living was in the Wright household.This is like that when is stated in the story that  Mrs. Wright was not happy there because Mr. Wright killed her love of singing.
