Which sentence might be used to depict the voice of a young character?
LenaWriter [7]

The answer to your question would be that the sentence that can be used to depict the voice of a young character is the following one: We ran the cars and jumped in because we hated school.

I believe that this is the correct answer because of the word choices selected by the speaker. The verbs used are simple verbs of momevent (ran) or phrasal verbs (jumped in). Consequently, the tone is very informal, as opposed to the other sentences which make use of formal word choices adding a lot of description to the passage (eager to jump in our parents' cars, empty parking lot, bursting with excitement, dreaded school, glad to finally be leaving school).

What is a common characteristic of Southern Gothic literature? Select all that apply.
Fynjy0 [20]

"Southern gothic literature" is a term used to encompass a particular strain of literature from the American South. It originated in the 19th century, evolving from American Gothic, which in turn, evolved from English Gothic literature. Its characteristics include irrational, horrific and transgressive thoughts, grotesque characters, dark humor. This genre is rooted in the South's tensions and aberrations related to slavery, racism and patriarchy.

Therefore, the characteristics that would apply are:

 • set only in the South, (although there are some examples that are considered within this genre but the setting is not a recognizable southern one, such as some Poe's poems)
 • romanticized southern life and culture
 • disturbed and twisted characters

“Through the Tunnel” is a coming-of-age story of Jerry, who wants to do what the other grown-up men can do, and his mother, who does not want to look too ‘possessive nor lacking in devotion’ knowing that her son is going through adolescence. Swimming through the tunnel is Jerry’s way to establish his identity or go through character adjustments. From the New York Times article “Doris Lessing Wins Nobel Prize in Literature”, it can be noted that Doris Lessing is a writer described as “that epicist of the female experience, who with skepticism, fire and visionary power…” by the Swedish academy. Her struggle when she was 15-year-old and a runaway from home must have also reflected the struggle of Jerry proving that he can swim through the tunnel.
