Read the editorial carefully. Analyze the argument by identifying its claim, reasons, and evidence. Identify any rhetorical devi

ces or logical fallacies used and explain why the author included them.
Article:
Parents should limit the amount of screen time their children are exposed to. Research now indicates a correlation between the amount of time toddlers spend on digital devices with poor developmental scores later on. That’s not to say one definitely causes the other, but rather that an association between the two has been found.

Doctors recommend that parents limit children’s use of technology to one hour per day. They also recommend that outside activity and exercise replace couch slouching and staring at the TV. Additionally, a recommended eight hours of sleep is prescribed. Many children use a handheld device to lull themselves to sleep like a teddy bear, but screens have the opposite effect. They stimulate kids and cause them to stay up later than they should.

All parents should take this new information seriously and put limits on technology use by young children.

Answer:

The editorial claims that parents should limit their children’s screen time. The reason given is that screen time may be associated with slower development later on. Evidence from a research study and doctors is given to support the claim. The writer uses an analogy to compare a screen to a teddy bear, which is a little disturbing. That would probably cause parents to question how long they let their children use screens, especially at night. The writer included the analogy to make a point, and I think it is effective.

Answer with Explanation;

Claim: <u>Parents should limit the amount of screen time their children are exposed to</u>

Reasons:<u> because the amount of time toddlers spend on digital devices is correlated to their poor developmental scores later on and it causes them to stay up later than they should.</u>

Evidence: <u>An association between the amount of time toddlers spend on digital devices and their poor developmental scores later in life has been found. Screens have the opposite effect to that of the teddy bear which lulls them to sleep.</u>

The author used the logical fallacy of "appeal to authority" by stating that <em>"doctor's recommend that parents limit children's use of technology to one hour per day" </em>and <em>"recommending eight hours of sleep." </em>The writer used this device in order to persuade people because the "doctor" is someone who is in<u> authority of such subject. </u>
