Answer:

The Cultural Revolution damaged China's economy while tens of millions of people were persecuted, with an estimated death toll ranging from hundreds of thousands to 20 million. ... Red Guards also destroyed historical relics as well as artifacts, and ransacked cultural and religious sites.

Mao began to see his influence weakening so he began by setting up a power struggle. It was called the cultural revolution.

He believed the current governments in both the Soviet Union and China were placing too much emphasis on outstanding intellectual and engineering pursuits and not enough on ideological purity.

At the time of his death, 1.5 million people had been killed. The economy was in tatters and there was a 12% reduction in the population. That means that the 1.5 million really does not account for the 12% reduction in population.

He shut down the schools so that the main participants in this class war were students and the youth.  They made life unbearable for the elderly. It disrupted the natural flow of the Chinese centuries old set of traditions where it was the duty of the young to care for the old.

Once Mao died, Chou en Lei took power and calmed things down. Mao was one of the monsters of world leaders to rule in the mid 20th century. He joins the ranks of Stalin and Hitler.

5. "Where was heard the mingled measure. From the fountain and the caves."  (from "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

Answer:

  1. burthen ------- meaning, weight, or significance
  2. recompence ------ reward
  3. loon -------- a silly or foolish person
  4. rill ------ a small stream
  5. measure ------ the rhythm of a piece of poetry or music

Explanation:

In the poem we can see that the poet is feeling overwhelmed with a weight, a burden. This burden is a mystery and as it is resolved and the poet feels comfortable talking about it, that weight is lightened.

When the author talks about recompenc, he is talking about a prize, something that will be given as a treat.

Loon refers to someone who is out of their mental normality, a person who shows signs of looseness and lack of control.

A rill is a small stream that does not present any major risks.

Measure is a type of measurement and can be related to many different systems, including a play, poetry and music.
