PART A: Which of the following most closely matches the meaning of the phrase “soft-pedal” as it is used in Paragraph 7?

English

Answer:

A. to downplay .

Explanation:

The phrase "to soft-pedal" is basically used to mean something that is made to look or seem less important or appear lesser than it really is.

In the text <em>A Defiant Muhammad Ali Was Cherished By Black Men</em>, Karen Grigsby Bates writes how the famous boxer was stripped of his titles after he expressed his strong objection to some of the country's acts due to his religious beliefs. Paragraph 7 shows the sentence <em>"Nor did he soft-pedal his conversion to Islam"</em>, for he strongly believes in his own religion and would <em>"never apologized for his beliefs"</em>. The closest meaning for the phrase<em> "soft-pedal</em>" in this case will be that he did not downplay his conversion to Islam and was open about it.

Thus, the correct answer is option A.

<span>The structural element that is used in the excerpt by Anaya but not in the excerpt by Nye is D.logos. Logos is a rhetorical tool that is usually applied as appeal to logic and reason. The first excerpt sets its mood by representing events as they are, and there is a clear point of 'cause and effect': the information given by author is supported with reason. The second excerpt is a nice example of allusion irony, so it can be defined as literary anecdote.</span>

"The Chrysanthemums" is a story by John Steinbeck. In it, he tells the story of Elisa Allen, who loves to garden. In particular, she loves chrysanthemums.

Elisa is married but seems to be lonely and bored with her life. A stranger arrives (the "tinker") who is looking for work. Although she does not have any work for him to do, she does give him some of her beloved chrysanthemum shoots in a pot. The tinker says he has a customer who wants some.

Elisa gives the tinker a pot filled with shoots and tells the tinker how to care for them. The shoots are very fragile. As Elisa continues to talk to him, she begins to feel an attraction for him. The tinker talks a little about his life and how he travels from place to place. Elisa would like to live as he does, always on the move, but the tinker says it is not a life for women. She tries to explain how strong and capable she is, but he continues to maintain his lifestyle is not for a woman. Soon he leaves.

Elisa watches him drive away. As he goes, she whispers: "That's a bright direction, there's a glowing there." Literally, Elisa means the light glinting off the tinker's wagon. Her words mean more than that, however. The tinker represents freedom, a freedom that Elisa, a woman, can never enjoy. It is noteworthy this light is moving away from her.

And so, Elisa's words indicate a desire for freedom and adventure, two things she will likely never have.

Gerald owed Cindy two dollars. He gave her ten because he felt bad. What should be put in between the two sentences to make them
PilotLPTM [1.2K]

Answer:

B) A semicolon

Explanation:

A semicolon is a punctuation mark used to join two clauses together.. These clauses must be independent. These independent clauses are joined by a semicolon to form a complete sentence. On the other hand, a comma is used to separate clauses or objects in a sentence or phrase. A semicolon should not be used in place of a colon or comma. All three have their own duties. A colon is used when an emphasis is about to be made or when listing items. A hyphen is used to join two or more words but without spacing

An apostrophe is used when a word was omitted.
